KATHY ALMQUIST -- VIOLA FACULTY
B.M., Hartt School of Music; M.M. Yale School of Music. Suzuki Training with Teri and David Einfeldt, Carol Smith, Carrie Reuning-Hummel, Betsy Stuen-Walker. Former faculty: Hartt School Community Division and Merritt Music (New Canaan, CT) Current faculty: SSN and the Intensive Community Program of GYBSO. Frequent Suzuki Institute faculty and guest clinician. Active free-lance violist. Former member of the Hartford Symphony.
DR. SCOTT CONKLIN -- VIOLIN FACULTY
Scott Conklin Dr. Conklin earned Master of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees from The University of Michigan School of Music as a student of Paul Kantor. He also holds a Bachelor of Music degree from The Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with David Updegraff. During his youth, Conklin was a student of Carol Dallinger, Violin Professor at the University of Evansville (IN). Scott currently serves as a member of the violin faculty at the University of Iowa.
JULIE MAURA -- VIOLIN FACULTY
Julie Maura Violinist and Director of Vivaldi Strings, Julie Maura, has a B.A. in violin performance, a B.S. in pre-medical studies from the University of Notre Dame, and M.M. in violin performance and pedagogy from Northern Illinois University. She has studied with Betty Monahan, Almita and Roland Vamos, Rachel Barton, Simin Ganatra, Mathias Tacke, Brian Lewis, and many other fine Suzuki teachers around the country. Ms. Maura has taught at various music institutes in the summer including Sound Encounters in Ottawa, Kansas; Texas State University Suzuki Strings Institute in San Marcos, Texas; Intermountain Suzuki String Institute in Drapper, Utah; and most recently DFW-WOW in Dallas, Texas. She has been a participant in the past four Starling-DeLay Juilliard Symposiums. Ms. Maura coordinated the Suzuki Youth Orchestras of the Americas for the 12th SAA Conference; and at the 13th SAA Conference in 2008, her tour group Vivaldi Strings was selected to perform for the International Ensembles Concert. For the past four years, she has been a guest lecturer at Wheaton College Conservatory. Ms. Maura currently teaches Suzuki violin, viola, music theory, and is director of the Vivaldi Strings Touring Group at the Community School of the Arts at Wheaton College.
MELISSA SOLOMON -- CELLO FACULTY
Melissa Solomon Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Melissa came from a family of professional musicians and developed an early passion for music. She immigrated to the United States after receiving a full merit scholarship for study at Interlochen Arts Academy. She continued her studies with internationally renowned cellist Timothy Eddy at the Juilliard School in New York City. She gained her Suzuki training at the Colorado Suzuki Institute and the Chicago Suzuki Institute. Ms. Solomon has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Africa, including such major cities as New York, London, Florence, Edinburgh, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
NICOLETTE SOLOMON -- ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, VIOLIN FACULTY
Nicolette Solomon Nicolette Solomon obtained a Bachelor of Music (Honors) and Higher Education Diploma (Post Graduate) at Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her Suzuki training continued with Christophe Bossaut at the Ecole Suzuki in Lyon, France. Nicolette studied with Dr. Suzuki at the Talent Education Research Institute in Matsumoto, Japan in 1992. She currently serves as Executive Director and President of the Suzuki Institute of Dallas.
DR. CARL VAN WYK -- ENRICHMENT FACULTY
Carl van Wyk Carl van Wyk graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1964 and completed his Master of Music degree in 1965. Carl van Wyk has composed more than forty works. He has served as accompanist at a number of Suzuki institutes and presents computer-driven composition and theory classes at the Colorado Suzuki Institute in Snowmass and other institutes.
