SI Courses
MASTER CLASSES
Meet in groups of 3 or 4 students. Each student has an individual lesson on a piece that is technically and musically mastered, while the other students and parents observe and grasp practice points applicable to their own studies.
GROUP REPERTOIRE / TECHNIQUE CLASSES
Stress ensemble, technique, and tone production through the review of repertoire up to and including the student’s current book level.
MUSIC AND MOVEMENT
Through participation in games, exercises, and improvisations, students learn to combine music and movement in order to develop rhythmic unity between the eye, ear, mind, and body. Open to all musicians. Also available for siblings at an additional charge.
CIRQUE du WOW
Similar to artists in the original Cirque du Soleil, a musician is multi-faceted and creative, and there are key characteristics that help define a brilliant musician. Explore and experience motion and movement as you learn about these key traits. CIRQUE du WOW will be an experience to remember! Open to all musicians.
ART
Do art and music have any connections? Yes! Learn to express yourself through another modality. Students will be creating a variety of art projects throughout the institute that incorporate many different textures and mediums. Please plan on bringing an extra T-shirt/paint shirt that can be worn during class. Open to all musicians. Also available for siblings at an additional charge.
FIDDLING
Students of the violin and viola explore traditional fiddling. This class provides an exciting journey through bowing patterns, rhythms, scales, and several traditional and celtic tunes. Open to violinists and violists in Book 2 and up.
FIDDLING FOR CELLOS
This “For Cellos Only” class is sure to be a blast! Learn to play fiddle tunes with the cello while enjoying group music making. Cellists will explore both melody and harmony parts to fiddle tunes. Open to cellists in Book 3 and up.
IMPROVISATION
Combine many traditional Suzuki songs with a twist! Bring your instrument, singing, dancing feet, and an open mind. This class is open to violins, violas, and cellos in Book 2 and up.
MUSICIANSHIP
Improve your music theory, learn about composers , and improve listening skills through games and activities that make music learning fun. Open to all musicians.
COMPOSE AND COMPUTE
Taught by Dr. Carl van Wyk. Learn to compose an original piece for the instrument of your choice using Sibelius music software. Compose and Compute will enable you to utilize Sibelius in this very creative and fun way. Open to students in Book 4 and up.
ORCHESTRA
String orchestras comprised of violins, violas, and cellos. Institute Directors will assign students to one of three orchestras according to their playing and reading abilities.
FOUNDATIONS GROUP CLASSES
Specifically designed for pre-twinklers. Students begin to explore the basics of the Suzuki method including beginning bow holds, proper placement of the violin or box, and stance.
CHAMBER MUSIC
Participants will meet with a small ensemble for one hour each day. Basic principles of chamber music will be stressed. Parts may be doubled to allow growth in confidence. Additional fee of $75 required. Eligibility requirements:
Viola: Completion of Seitz Concerti
Cello: Completion of Book 3
