Student Institute Courses

Meet in groups of 3 or 4 students. Each has an individual lesson on a piece
that is technically and musically mastered, while the other students and parents
observe and grasp practice points applicable to their own studies.
Stress ensemble, technique, and tone production through the review of repertoire
up to and including the student's current piece.
The study of the musical elements through movement. Through participation in games,
exercises, and improvisations, students learn to combine music and movement in
order to develop rhythmic unity between the eye, ear, mind, and body.
Do art and music have any connections? Yes! The students begin the first part of
this sessions studying the commonalities of the two. The second part of this
session will include creating works of art that illustrate what has been
learned.
Exposes serious students of the violin to the technical nuances of traditional
Scottish fiddling. This class provides a technical analysis of fiddling,
focusing primarily on the use of the bow and compares classical and
non-classical techniques.
Combines Farrar's creation, the World's Only Adjustable Human Metronome, to
delight institute participants around the country.Bring your instrument,
singing, dancing feet and an open mind.
Taught by Carl van Wyk, learn to compose an original piece for the instrument of
your choice using Sibelius 4!. Compose & Compute will enable you to utilize
Sibelius 4 in this very creative and fun way.
A string ensemble of violins, violas, cellos, and basses. The institute
directors will assign students to one of the orchestras or other appropriate
class according to their playing and reading abilities.
Specifically designed for pre-twinklers. In a group format, students begin to
explore the basics of the Suzuki method including beginning bow holds, proper
placement of the violin or box, and stance.
Participants will meet with a small ensemble for one hour each day. Basic
principles of chamber music will be stressed. Parts may be doubled to allow
growth in confidence. Additional fee required.
A. Junior Division: ages 9-11
B. Senior Division: ages 12 and older
Eligibility requirements for both Junior and Senior divisions:
Violin: Completion of Concerto in G Minor by Vivaldi
Viola: Completion of Seitz Concerti
Cello: Completion of Book 3
